Gala Returns In-Person, Sets New Record

On Thursday, October 7th, Breaking Ground held our annual Celebrating Home & Community Gala live and in-person (with proof of vaccination and ample outdoor space for social distancing). Gala sponsors and guests joined us to honor Hugh Frater, CEO of Fannie Mae, and raise critical funding for our housing and programs.

This was our first time at The Glasshouse NYC, a new event venue with spectacular views of the Hudson River and up and down Manhattan’s West Side. Photos from the evening are available here.

We are delighted to share an encore video of the evening's program, featuring presentations from Board Chair Michael Franco, President and CEO Brenda Rosen, Board Member Kara McShane, and our distinguished honoree, Hugh Frater. There's also a story from a client of our Street to Home outreach program, Joseph Schear, who came indoors through The Andrews, Breaking Ground's safe haven transitional housing site on the Bowery, and now has an apartment of his own.

Each year, Breaking Ground serves nearly 9,000 people across our programs and housing resources. Through street outreach, upwards of 500 chronically homeless New Yorkers come indoors to transitional and permanent supportive housing, and more than 4,400 people sleep under a Breaking Ground roof every night. And with over 1,000 units of permanent supportive and affordable housing in development, we’re always working to help more people come off the streets and find a stable, secure home.

We extend a very special thanks to our generous sponsors, who helped us set a new record and raise over $2.8 million to aid the most vulnerable homeless New Yorkers. Many more people just like Mr. Schear will receive vital services thanks to your support.
