Breaking Ground is a pioneer in the development of permanent and transitional supportive housing. Using innovative financing and historic restoration, we revitalize buildings and neighborhoods. Each year, we work to increase the supply of affordable housing for those with the greatest economic need. We operate more than 4,500 units of housing, with over 2,000 more in various stages of development.
Home is More Than Four Walls and a Roof
At Breaking Ground, home is a support system. Our supportive housing has a full spectrum of wraparound supports that help people recover from the trauma of homelessness, achieve stability, and rebuild their lives in housing.
Design is for Everyone
We believe that great design can be a powerful tool to uplift and support individuals and communities. That's why we partner with world-class architects such as COOKFOX, Ennead, Alexander Gorlin Architects, FXCollaborative, Jonathan Kirschenfeld, and Robert A.M. Stern Architects.
Focus on Sustainability
Human wellness and environmental sustainability are closely linked. Since 2005, all of our new developments are designed to be LEED or Enterprise Green Communities certified. Features include sustainable design elements, such as low-toxicity paints and materials to protect indoor air quality, reliance on natural light, energy-efficient heating and lighting systems, green roofs, and rooftop solar arrays. We recently completed our first Passive House-certified residence, which aims to significantly reduce reliance on municipal energy supplies and push further toward net zero building operations.
Our ultimate goal is to provide beautiful, sustainable homes that allow formerly homeless and low-income individuals and families to establish lives of dignity and security in housing.
