For more than three decades, Breaking Ground has maintained an unrelenting focus on developing and operating exceptional permanent supportive and affordable residences - housing that has enabled thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers to overcome or avoid homelessness.
Last year was no exception. In 2022 we opened more than 600 new apartments in Brooklyn and the Bronx, the most in any single year since our original residence, the Times Square. 90 Sands, in DUMBO Brooklyn, brought 491 units of permanent supportive and affordable housing to one of New York City’s most expensive neighborhoods, with accelerated placements for people exiting homelessness, reducing time spent homeless by as much as two months. And at Betances Residence in the South Bronx, we opened our first Passive House certified supportive housing, a rigorous energy use standard that pushes the envelope in sustainable development. The Passive House standard also brings fresh filtered air directly into each unit, a boon for the vulnerable older adults who call Betances home.
Beyond our permanent housing accomplishments, Breaking Ground forged new initiatives in our Connect to Care suite of outreach programs, working with the Partnership for New York City’s Homeless Assistance Fund to dramatically expand street outreach in key areas of the City. And with the opening of two new transitional housing sites in Brooklyn and Manhattan, we helped more people come indoors off the streets than in any previous 12-month period.
We are pleased to release the 2022 Impact Report below. Thanks to you, our community of supporters, we will continue to envision and build a future where everyone has a home.
