Along with our partner, Comunilife, Breaking Ground provides 160 supportive and affordable apartments for a mix of formerly homeless individuals with special needs and low-income New Yorkers at La Central, part of a larger development in the South Bronx.
This five-building, 1.1 million square foot development in the South Bronx will bring 992 units of mixed-income housing, a new 50,000 square foot YMCA, a television studio, a skate park, multiple landscaped areas for residents and neighbors alike, and much more.
The larger project will include over 600,000 watts of solar panels to power co-generation, providing up to a 50 percent savings on energy and reducing reliance on the area’s electric grid. Additionally, low-flow fixtures and water-efficient appliances will outfit every apartment, cutting water consumption by as much as 45 percent. Landscaped common areas will provide tenants access to quality outdoor space, and the new YMCA will provide tenants with easy access to health and wellness.
Project partners include Hudson Companies, BRP Development, ELH-TKC LLC, Comunilife, YMCA of Greater New York, and BronxNet.
Breaking Ground's supportive residence opened in September of 2019, and the remainder of the La Central development will be completed in phases over the coming years.
