Each January, we partner with the New York City Department of Homeless Services in the annual Homeless Outreach Population Estimate (HOPE), a unique overnight event during which volunteers fan out across the city and conduct a census of New Yorkers sleeping outside.

REGISTER TO VOLUNTEER FOR HOPE 2019

We need your help to make it count. Many volunteers return year after year for an experience they describe as “rewarding” and “enlightening.” It’s truly a chance to connect with New York City and its inhabitants like never before.

This year’s event will take place on Monday, January 28th, 2019, from late Monday night to early Tuesday morning.

FAQ

What is HOPE Count?

HOPE Count is an annual census of individuals sleeping outside, organized by New York City’s Department of Homeless Services and Breaking Ground. The data you and your fellow volunteers will gather during the event helps us adjust our efforts to make the greatest possible impact on helping the chronically homeless to realize better lives.

Why participate?

HOPE Count may take place on a chilly winter night, but it is ultimately a heart-warming experience. Volunteers find it gratifying to seek out and offer assistance to some of the city’s most vulnerable men and women, and contribute in a tangible way to the fight to end homelessness. It’s a great way to meet like-minded individuals, and it’s even pretty fun.

What will I do as a HOPE volunteer?

Volunteers will be assigned to teams, each with an experienced team leader, to survey predetermined areas of Midtown Manhattan. You and your team will conduct a brief survey with each individual you encounter that is designed to assess each person's housing situation, and offer transportation to shelter to any homeless individual seeking services.

How do I register to volunteer for HOPE?

We simply need you to fill out this registration form. You'll receive a confirmation and details for the night of January 28th via email.

What if I'm not able to participate in HOPE Count?

While HOPE Count is the once-a-year opportunity to witness Breaking Ground’s street outreach efforts up close and in person, it’s not the only way to get involved. We have year-round volunteer opportunities at many of our buildings and in our head office. And of course, we are always grateful for donations, which help us bring vital services to people on the street. We are a 501(c)(3) organization, and contributions are fully tax-deductible as allowed by law. Donate now, or explore other ways to give.
