The Bernheimer Architecture-designed Sutphin Senior Housing marks Breaking Ground's first permanent residence in the borough of Queens, and second development that meets rigorous Passive House standards. By significantly reducing reliance on municipal energy supplies, the Passive House standard helps push toward a goal of zero emissions in the operation of residential buildings.
Designed for seniors who are exiting homelessness or living on very-low incomes, Sutphin Senior Housing has several features that aim to help residents remain physically engaged, including entrances and corridors that promote active design principles, specially designed outdoor/garden spaces, and accommodations for residents with mobility challenges throughout the building.
In addition, the building is home to a state-of-the-art, 15,000 sq ft Federally Qualified Health Center on the ground floor and cellar levels, operated by our partners at the Community Healthcare Network.
