Breaking Ground at La Central in the Bronx

On Monday, July 24th, Breaking Ground and our partner, Comunilife, gathered with our partners in government and finance to celebrate the start of construction on 160 new units of supportive and affordable housing at La Central in the Bronx. Breaking Ground’s new building will be home to formerly homeless individuals with special needs and low-income New Yorkers.

Despite heavy rains that morning, more than 60 people showed up to celebrate the momentous occasion, including Bronx Borough President, Ruben Diaz, Jr. The Borough President made it clear that this was an important project, noting “La Central will go a long way towards showing the rest of the world that we are back: we are no longer the Bronx of the seventies and eighties.”  Comunilife CEO Dr. Rosa Gil echoed the Borough President’s remarks about the project saying, “La Central marks a new era for this neighborhood.”

We were also honored to host New York State Homes and Community Renewal Commissioner, RuthAnne Visnauskas, New York State Office of Temporary Disability Assistance Commissioner Samuel Roberts, Deputy Commissioner Molly Park of New York City Housing Preservation and Development, and Jennifer Trepinski from the Corporation for Supportive Housing.

In her remarks, Breaking Ground’s President and CEO, Brenda Rosen, said “we’re all here today, huddled under tents and umbrellas in the pouring rain. And Breaking Ground provides outreach services in all of Brooklyn and Queens and a portion of Manhattan, so our teams are out there right now, working with people who are homeless on the streets. Imagine how hard it is - not knowing where you’ll be next, trying to get out of the rain, perhaps even huddled under a tent. That’s why what we’re doing here today, in the rain, is so important - creating safe, secure, permanent homes for people who are homeless right now on the streets, so they can come indoors and have the support they need to rebuild their lives.”

Breaking Ground is constructing and will be the property manager for La Central’s 160-unit residence upon completion, responsible for marketing, leasing, maintenance and tenant services. Our partner, Comunilife, will provide social services, including case management and psychiatric care for special needs tenants.

Our project partners for architecture include FXFOWLE and MHG Architects, and the construction will be led by Monadnock Construction, Inc.

We are especially excited to be a part of the larger La Central development, which will bring more affordable housing and new community amenities to the South Bronx. Including our supportive housing residence, five new buildings and nearly 1,000 new affordable apartments, will be built at La Central. In addition, La Central will feature a 45,000 square foot YMCA, a skate park, a series of interconnected courtyard and playground spaces, a rooftop farm, new studios for BronxNet, 20,000 square feet of new retail space, and an astronomy tower in associations with the Bronx High School for Science. Project partners include The BRP Companies, The Hudson Companies, ELH-TKC LLC, The Related Companies, and the YMCA of Greater New York. The larger project is expected to begin construction later this year.

La Central will mark Breaking Ground’s fifth supportive and affordable residence in the Bronx, and will bring our total apartments in the borough to nearly 1,000 units.
